Free Essays on Freud On Homosexuality

In his 1905 Three Essays on the Theory of Sexuality, Freud challenged traditional views of one’s sexuality to be an inherent and predetermined fate in relation to one’s gender. Karl Ulrich’s and earlier thinkers, thought homosexuality to be an inborn condition within a minority of men. They speculated that a biological inheritance of certain female mental traits is responsible for making men homosexual. Freud contested that nature of one’s sexuality is absent of any gender related characteristics. His contention was that all humans were initially born with a bisexual nature and the manifestation of one’s sexuality is an evolutionary course of one’s upbringing and interaction within their surrounding environment. Write a Case Study - its easy!

Write a Case Study - its easy! How to write Case Study correctly Review of a problem or situation in real life, in which the author analyzes the main problems. In this case, all facts should refer to scientific literature or research results on this topic. In the end, you draw conclusions about why the situation arose, and how to find the way out. The definition of a case study is the following: it is a method of applying theoretical knowledge to real life situations that you can face at any time. Such a study gives the student much useful. He: 1. Trains in using theoretical knowledge in practice; 2. Learns to analyze problems in a real life situation; 3. Draws conclusions about how the knowledge gained in the course of academic research will help him to properly respond to the situation. There are many types of case studies: 1. Illustrative; 2. Exploratory; 3. Critical instance; 4. Program implementation; 5. Program effects; 6. Prospective; 7. Cumulative; 8. Narrative; 9. Medical; 10. Embedded. Let us consider in more detail the four most popular types of the case study. Illustrative study. This is a description of one or two cases from real life. They allow the reader to get acquainted with the concept and give a general idea of the solution of the problem in a particular case. Cumulative case study. Several cases are considered here. The main purpose of the author is to draw up generalized conclusions. Narrative studies. The situation is seen as an artistic story and is written by a third person. There are characters and a plot. Critical Instance. One or more cases are used here. Then an assumption is made, which is criticized by the author of the study. This kind of case study is very popular for the analysis of situations of causes and effects. Structure of writing a response to a particular case Before you start writing a response to a case study, read it carefully first. It's best if you do it two or three times. In doing so, pay special attention to the main problems and a group of people who are interested in solving the situation. The answer to the case study has its own structure. It includes four parts: 1. Introduction; 2. Description; 3. Discussion; 4. Conclusions and recommendations. Now consider each part in more detail. Introduction Your goal is to briefly describe the life situation and describe the problem to be solved. Description Create a more detailed description of the problem. Proceed from the fact that the reader does not have any knowledge at all in this field. This means that you need to give exhaustive information about the situation before proceeding to its discussion. Discussion This part of your essay is a list of pre-prepared questions, as well as answers to them. The answers should be based on information from the scientific literature. The "Discussion" block can include such questions (and subsequent answers to them): 1. What is the problem and what are the consequences for all involved persons?; 2. How can information in the scientific literature help in solving this problem?; 3. What are the ways to solve the problem? 4. How can you evaluate ideas and solutions to this problem for a specific case? When you give arguments in favor of solving the problem, refer to specific sources of literature. Also, you can use the quotes of scientists entirely. Every answer must necessarily have a reference to academic work. Conclusions and recommendations Now you need to write a conclusion. Here you describe the conclusions you came to, and also give recommendations for solving this problem. You should make your own recommendations that reflect your point of view. The correct approach to writing the answer In order to correctly approach the writing of a response to a case study, first answer a number of questions: 1. Is the research topic really atypical and requiring detailed analysis? 2. Is the case really important? 3. Is there an opposite point of view on the solution to this problem? If so, what arguments can you give in favor of your opinion?

Tips for Trainers Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Tips for Trainers - Research Paper Example article, the comic trainee who attempts to make jokes and a well delivered joke uplifts the session while a mistimed one or an explicit one can increase awkwardness. This particular type lies somewhere between the chatterboxes and the challengers as they tend to add unwanted humor based on their own experiences, most of the time with long explanations (Shetty, 2010). One can counter chatterboxes (talkative) trainees by paying more attention to them and asking them questions about the training subject. The introverts or slow learners (passive) trainees may open up if they are paired up with chatterboxes and made leaders of the group in training activities, asking them questions can result in a childish silence so encourage them in non-direct ways or throw really easy questions at them. The know-it-all or challenger (angry) type can be handled by recognizing their contribution and then throwing the same question back at them, new information or facts can satisfy them and only a confident trainer would subdue their high self confidence so knowing the inside out of subject area is very important, irrelevant questions or experiences can be kept for after the training discussion usually held one to one. You do not want to hurt somebody’s feelings as a trainer, if a joke is delivered well and taken well by the participants then the comedian can get confident and make more tries although as a trainer you have an agenda to follow hence you should always tell the participants that the session is for learning purpose and that we should get back to the topic at

Law enforcement today Essay Example for Free

Law enforcement today Essay Law enforcement officers have a very important role in society. They have a job that involves lots of decision making and using personal judgment. Law officers have many duties while at work. Law officers have to decide whether or not someone is breaking the law and how they will enforce the situation. Law officers are sometimes expected to be perfect. They have to catch all the bad guys and save all the innocent. Unfortunately it doesnt always work that way but officers try to do the best of their ability. All officers are different in that some are more strict and you cant get away with as much, and others are very laid back and you are apt to get a way with more. I believe all officers should be strict when it comes to safety issues, and peoples health is at risk. I also believe officers should try and teach you what is against the law before you are punished, like warnings should be issued when no one is in harms way. Some officers think they are immortal when they put on a badge, sometimes officers forget what theyre there for and go too far. There are many cases when people have been falsely abused by officers for no reason. All people have rights, even when you have committed a crime. You are read your rights when you get arrested and no one can take those rights away from you. If an officer violates those rights, you will probably win you case because of it. I think the laws and rules citizens have to follow are reasonable. To run a country successfully, you need to have laws that cover everything. People also need to educate themselves on what the laws are. In this country, you are innocent until proven guilty. Everyone also has a right to a trial before a jury when you have been accused of a crime. Each case obviously has its own circumstances, and thats why everyone gets a trial. I think the more serious the crime, the less space or freedom you have. Obviously there are different penalties for speeding and murder. They say the crime should fit the punishment. I think the penalties in this country are very fair. I dont think to many people get off too easy or too harshly. I believe the punishment system is pretty accurate in this country. I think a lot of police work is just plain old confidence. Criminals are going to take the state police more seriously than the police in a little town in the middle of nowhere. Law enforcement officers have a bad reputation of being fat, out of shape, eating donuts, sitting at a desk and so on. Some officers you see  are definently out of shape but they might have great knowledge in the field of law enforcement. I think all officers who go on patrol should have to pass a physical test as well as a written test each year to be certified. Im not saying out of shape officers should be fired, but they shouldnt be on patrol. They could be put at a desk or do detective like work. I think officers should be in good shape and look intimidating towards criminals. I think that would cut crime rates down. Criminals would be less apt to rob a bank if they knew a young, in shape, fast cop was chasing them rather than if a three hundred pound, forty six year old cop was. All these things I just mentioned would probably help reduce crime, but they are just opinions. I truly believe law officers today do a good job at what they do and deserve a tremendous amount of respect for it. Being a law officer is not only a risky job but it is kind of heroic in a way. I think it takes a special person to be a law officer and not everyone should able to be one.

Teen Alcatraz :: essays research papers

Teen Alcatraz   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  It was the year 1999, I was a reckless little 13 year old. I had been in and out of foster care for years. I had been adopted at 7 years old by a senile 50 year old single woman. She treated my foster siblings and I like we were trash. She was basically the wicked witch from the west. She used us and abused us; she treated us like her personal slaves. I had decided that I could not go on living like this, and I was running away and I would never return that house again.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  One cold night, my cousin and I decided our lives were intolerable. We planned our great escape. We threw our bags out of our bedroom windows. Then at exactly 10:30, we walked out our front doors and ran to the nearest empty factory, and met there.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  We ran for hours and hours, our destination was an old abandoned trailor of my cousins. It was a crazy night.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  By the time we made it to the trailor, hours later I was dirty, mad, and I had wet pants.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  We walked inside, the broken down trailor and just started to get into pajamas and there was headlights in the driveway. I panicked and hid. My cousin yelled, â€Å"Krissy, Krissy, it’s my mommy!,† I said, â€Å"HIDE!!!!!,† because I was not going back to that tyrannical mother of mine.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Well, I guess my cousin was feeling the same as me and she decided to RUN outside to her mother and rat us both out. Her mother, my aunt, let me stay with her that night.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The next day at school, I was called to the principal’s office, and a lady from the Department of Human Services was there. She proceeded to tell me that if I would not go home, right then and there, that their only choice was to send me to shelter.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  I, being as naà ¯ve as I was, said, â€Å"FINE! At least I can start over!†   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  So, that very day they, transferred me in the middle of Social Studies test to a place where they said I would love, and people would treat me how I wanted to be treated, this place would be called, â€Å"Agency Shelter.† It was about five miles from Ottumwa, Ia.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  It was about an hour and half drive. I was terrified, and happy at the same time.

Development of Jim in Huckleberry Finn

This article demonstrates the different phases of Jim’s development to show how Twain used him as a tool to condemn mistreatment of black people. The author begins with the analysis of Jim as a simple gag routine which was a common role of African Americans during this time period. However, Twain slowly makes the audience realize that the Jim is a real person, beginning with a profound statement of self-awareness and destiny â€Å"Jim's reflection that ‘I's rich now, come to look at it. I owns mysef, en I's wuth eight hund'd dollars. I wisht I had de money, I `wouldn' want no mo'’ moves outside the world of low comedy, and Jim becomes something more than the ordinary stage Negro.† By this point in the book, the reader begins to realize, along with an unwilling Huck, that Jim is an intelligent and respectable man, equal with any white of the South. Jim’s continuing demonstration of intellectuality and compassion lead the reader to believe that he is the only true â€Å"adult† or â€Å"human† person in the novel while acting as a foil to the emotionally young and adamant Huck. Eventually, the reader is lead to sympathize and relate to Jim while he takes on the traditional role of a â€Å"white man† and Huck that of a â€Å"black man†, evidence of Twain’s slow transformation of Jim from the typical comic relief to the unusual source of reason and humanity. Citation: Hansen, Chadwick. â€Å"The Character of Jim and the Ending of `Huckleberry Finn'.† DISCovering Authors. Detroit: Gale, 2003. Discover Collection. Web. 27 Oct. 2011. This article talks about how Jim starts off as a stereotypical negro. Jim starts off very superstitious. Jim also believes that his hairball can tell the fortunes. In the beginning, Jim uses Tom’s trickery to his advantage. Instead of saying that somehow his hat ended up in a tree when he woke up, he told everyone that he was possessed by the devil and that witches had ridden him all over the south. Later in the story Jim does not act so foolishly. Jim develops into a sort of role model near the end of the story. Jim actually takes responsibility and cares for both Huck and Tom and protect them from harm. Jim could have easily have left both Tom and Huck and escaped to freedom near the end of the story yet he protected both of them and actually cared for them. Jim went to being naà ¯ve to becoming a responsible role model for Huck and Tom. Citation: James, Pearl. â€Å"Overview of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.† EXPLORING Novels. Detroit: Gale, 2003. Discover Collection. Web. 24 Apr. 2012. The article talks about how Jim is second only to Huck in this novel. However, when we meet Jim at the beginning of the book, Jim is portrayed as a dumb negro. When Jim is introduced in chapter 2, it is thought that Jim is just the widow’s slave and really has no more importance than that rather than the fact that Tom enjoys to mess with him. In the beginning of the book, Jim is a superstitious fool who believes that he has a hairball that can tell the future. However, Jim’s character develops greatly throughout the book and Jim becomes a major character in the story. The events in the story most likely would have never been able to take place if it hadn’t been for Jim. In the end, he came a long way from being the foolish negro working for the widow.

Philippine Legend Of Calamba: In War And Peace By Demetrio L. Hilberio Essay

An excerpt from Calamba – In War and Peace by Demetrio L. Hilberio tells us of the legend of the name of Calamba. This legend is inscribed on a stone marker that can found at the base of the giant claypot and can be read as : The authentic legend goes that at about the turn of 16th century, two Spanish soldiers came to a village by the shore of Laguna de Bay. Attracted by the vast plain with verdant greeneries that spread up to a majestic mountain, the strangers became curious to learn the name of the place. Soon there came a native young lady carrying an earthen jar by her waist. She was to fetch water from the lake. Seizing the opportunity, the two soldiers inquired in Spanish from the young lady the name of the place. | Frightened with the sight of white strangers in colorful uniforms, the native damsel got confused. Thinking that the soldiers were asking what she was carrying, she answered nervously â€Å"Kalamba†¦Kalamba..† referring to the earthen jar she was clasping by her waist. There upon the girl scurried away until she was lost in the nearby forest. Themselves surprised, the two Spanish soldiers were left muttering â€Å"Kalamba†¦Kalamba† Since then the small village on a vast plain close to the Laguna de Bay has been known by the name of Kalamba. Legend of coconut Long ago there was a Chamorro family belonging to the Achote tribe. The family had a beautiful young daughter who was admired by everyone in the tribe. One day the girl became very thirsty. She wanted to drink the juice from a special fruit. Everyone tried to find the fruit she described but to no avail. Soon the girl became very ill and died. The father buried the girl on a hill over looking the village. He placed a beautiful headstone on her grave and the people covered it with many beautiful flowers. One day the villagers noticed a strange plant growing on the girl’s grave. They thought it was magic and built a shelter to protect it. Five years after the plant appeared, it had grown 20 feet tall, strange looking fruits appeared. One of the fruits dropped to the ground and cracked open. The chief called on the father of the dead girl to eat the strange fruit but he refused. He called his wife to eat the fruit. She said it was sweet and chewy and called it coconut. It remains one of the main foods eaten by the Chamorro people. Legend of makahiya Long time ago, there was a couple in Barangay Masagana (Pampanga today) who wanted a daughter. Their wish was granted and the wife gave birth to a baby girl. They called her Maria. Maria was very beautiful but very shy that she wouldn’t go out from their house. Weeks later, Spaniards came to their town. The Spaniards were very cruel that they get everything they wanted. They rob houses and kill everyone who gets in their way and who refused to give what they wanted. The couple was very frightened to lose their daughter so, they they hid Maria in the bushes so that the Spaniard coud’nt find her. After the Spaniards left their town, the couple tried to look for Maria but they couldn’t find her even in the bushes where they hid her, instead they found a little plant that is very sensitive that when you touch it, it would immidietlyclose. So they thought it was their daughter, Maria. They called the plant â€Å"Makahiya† that means â€Å"touch me not,† li ke their daughter who was very shy. LEGEND OF BANANA Long ago, before Philippines was invaded by other countries, the only religion Filipinos know is Paganism. They know no God until it was invaded by the Spaniards and killed everyone who refuses to give their riches. In the town of Vigan (in Philippines), one rich family planned to hide their beautiful daughter named Corazon because they heard that the Spaniard captain wanted their child. Corazon was one of the most beautiful maiden in their town. Every man there wants to have her hand in marriage. One day, when a group of Spaniard soldiers tried again to gather all the riches and properties and everything people have in every house, the parents of Corazon panicked knowing their daughter is missing. Corazon was helping other families to escape from the Spaniard soldiers because the soldiers where trying to kill them. When Corazon headed back to her parents, a Spaniard eventually caught her and brought her to their captain. The captain want Corazon as his bride but Corazon refused and the captain ordered to kill her and throw her body on the street. When her parents heard the news that their daughter was slaughtered, they gave Corazon a funeral. Because there were no coffin in their time, the townspeople buried Corazon’s body underground. The next day, the second ceremony is about to start, when the graveyard where Corazon was buried was very crowded. When the parents of Corazon arrived, they saw a plant growing from the soil. They were curious with the plant because they haven’t seen such plant. As the days pass, the plant grew and grew until a fruit came out. The people didn’t know exactly if it is a fruit or not because it was very unusual to them. The parents of Corazon concluded that it is their daughter and called the plant, Banana. When the Spaniard heard about unusual happening, they fled the town hurriedly. They were scared to death because they thought it was a curse or something. The thing that the invaders don’t know is, Banana was formed with pure heart. The townspeople don’t know why the parents of Corazon named it that way. But wise men of the town came to a conclusion why the plant was named Banana, it’s because the letters â€Å"ana† in the word Banana means â€Å"his/her or ownership of an individual† and the heart shaped fruit that came out from the plant was Corazon; and Corazon means â€Å"heart†. That’s why Banana was translated as â€Å"Her Heart† LEGEND OF butterfly The legend of the first butterflies say that there was upon a time in a village, an old woman used to have a beautiful flower garden by the shore of a lake. The fishermen from around the nearby villages were in love with her and used to come to her and exchange their fishes from flowers.Everyone in the village noticed something magical about her, because at night her house had a magical glow and once in a while some dwarfs were seen helping a beautiful young woman work in the garden. One day a young couple, very proud I must add, visited the village were the old woman lived, and while walking around, noticed the old woman’s beautiful flower garden. The couple decided to get inside the garden and grab some bouquets, when the old woman sees this, walks out of her house and ask the couple to leave, when they turn around to see who was talking to them, they make fun of her and ignore her. Then the old woman, insulted, touches the couple with her cane saying:†Since you love beautiful things, you will live from now on as beautiful insects†And that day was created the butterflies came to be, who always are found near beautiful flowers. And this is how the Butterflies came to be. FABLES The lion and the mouse Lion was sleeping peacefully when he was woken by something running up and down his back and over his face.Pretending to be still asleep, the Lion slowly opened one eye and saw that it was a little mouse. With lightening speed the Lion reached out and caught the little mouse in one of his large paws. He dangled it by its tail and roared, â€Å"I’m the King of Beasts! You’ll pay with your life for showing me such disrespect.†The Lion held the little mouse over his huge open jaws and prepared to swallow it.â€Å"Please, please don’t eat me, Mr King of Beasts, Sir,† squeaked the mouse. â€Å"If you forgive me this time and let me go I’ll never, never forget it.†Ã¢â‚¬Å"I may be able to do you a good turn in the future to repay your kindness,† it squeaked.â€Å"You, do me a favour!† roared the Lion with laughter. â€Å"That is the funniest thing I’ve ever heard.†Still laughing, the Lion put the mouse down on the ground and said; â€Å"You’ve made me laugh so much I can’t eat you now. Go on, off you go before I change my mind.†The little mouse scurried away as fast as its little legs could go.Not long after this the Lion was caught in a trap by some hunters. They tied him to a tree with rope while they went to get their wagon. The little mouse was nearby and came when he heard the mighty Lion’s roar for help. The mouse gnawed the rope with his sharp teeth and set the Lion free.â€Å"I know you didn’t believe me, but I told you I could help you one day,† squeaked the little mouse. â€Å"Even a little mouse like me can help some one as big and strong as you.†Ã¢â‚¬Å"Thank you my little friend. I won’t forget that lesson,† said the Lion as he ran away before the hunters returned. The fox and the crow One bright morning as the Fox was following his sharp nose through the wood in search of a bite to eat, he saw a Crow on the limb of a tree overhead. This was by no means the first Crow the Fox had ever seen. What caught his attention this time and made him stop for a second look, was that the lucky Crow held a bit of cheese in her beak. â€Å"No need to search any farther,† thought sly Master Fox. â€Å"Here is a dainty bite for my breakfast.† Up he trotted to the foot of the tree in which the Crow was sitting, and looking up admiringly, he cried, â€Å"Good-morning, beautiful creature!† The Crow, her head cocked on one side, watched the Fox suspiciously. But she kept her beak tightly closed on the cheese and did not return his greeting. â€Å"What a charming creature she is!† said the Fox. â€Å"How her feathers shine! What a beautiful form and what splendid wings! Such a wonderful Bird should have a very lovely voice, since everything else about her is so perfect. Could she sing just one song, I know I should hail her Queen of Birds.† Listening to these flattering words, the Crow forgot all her suspicion, and also her breakfast. She wanted very much to be called Queen of Birds. So she opened her beak wide to utter her loudest caw, and down fell the cheese straight into the Fox’s open mouth. â€Å"Thank you,† said Master Fox sweetly, as he walked off. â€Å"Though it is cracked, you have a voice sure enough. But where are your wits?† The Donkey And The Lapdog A MAN had a Donkey, and a Maltese Lapdog, a very great beauty. The Donkey was left in a stable and had plenty of oats and hay to eat, just as any other Donkey would. The Lapdog knew many tricks and was a great favorite with his master, who often fondled him and seldom went out to dine without bringing him home some tidbit to eat. The Donkey, on the contrary, had much work to do in grinding the corn-mill and in carrying wood from the forest or burdens from the farm. He often lamented his own hard fate and contrasted it with the luxury and idleness of the Lapdog, till at last one day he broke his cords and halter, and galloped into his master’s house, kicking up his heels without measure, and frisking and fawning as well as he could. He next tried to jump about his master as he had seen the Lapdog do, but he broke the table and smashed all the dishes upon it to atoms. He then attempted to lick his master, and jumped upon his back. The servants, hearing the strange hubbub and perceiving the danger of their master, quickly relieved him, and drove out The Donkey to his stable with kicks and clubs and cuffs. The Donkey, as he returned to his stall beaten nearly to death, thus lamented: â€Å"I have brought it all on myself! Why could I not have been contented to labor with my companions, and not wish to be idle all the day like that useless little Lapdog!† THE CAT AND THE MOUSE A cat and a mouse wanted to live together and keep house as a partnership. They prepared for winter by buying a pot of fat, and because they had no safer spot for it, they placed it under the alter in the church until such time that they would need it. However, one day the cat took a longing for it, and approached the mouse. â€Å"Listen, little mouse, my cousin has invited me to serve as godfather. She has given birth to a brown and white spotted little son, and I am supposed to carry him to his baptism. Is it all right for me to leave you home alone with the housework today?†Ã¢â‚¬ Go ahead,† said the mouse, â€Å"and if they serve you something good, just think of me. I would certainly welcome a drop of good red christening wine.† But the cat went straight to the church and ate the top off the fat and then went strolling about the town and did not return home until evening.†You must have had a good time,† said the mouse. â€Å"What name did they gi ve the child?†Ã¢â‚¬ Top-Off,† answered the cat.†Top-Off? That’s a strange name, one that I’ve not yet heard.†Soon afterward the cat took another longing, went to the mouse, and said, â€Å"I’ve been asked to serve as godfather once again. The child has a white ring around its body. I can’t say no. You’ll have to do me a favor and take care of the house by yourself today.†The mouse agreed, and the cat went and ate up half the fat. When she returned home, the mouse asked, â€Å"What name did this godchild receive?†Ã¢â‚¬ Half-Gone.†Half-Gone? What are you telling me? I’ve never heard that name. It certainly isn’t in the almanac.†Now the cat could not take his mind off the pot of fat. â€Å"I’ve been invited to serve as godfather for a third time,† he said. â€Å"The child is black and has white paws, but not another white hair on his entire body. That only happens once in a few years. You will let me go, won’t you?†Top-Off, Half-Gone,† said the mouse. â€Å"Those names are so curious that it makes me a bit suspicious, but go ahead.†The mouse took care of the house and cleaned up everything, while the cat finished off the pot of fat. Round and full, she did not return until nighttime.†What is the third child’s name?†Ã¢â‚¬ All-Gone.†Ã¢â‚¬ All-Gone! That is a worrisome name!† said the mouse. â€Å"All-Gone. Just what does this mean? I’ve never seen that name in print,† and she shook her head and went to bed. No one invited the cat to serve as godfather a fourth time. Winter soon came, and when they could no longer find anything to eat outside, the mouse said to the cat, â€Å"Let’s get the provisions that we’ve hid in the church under the altar.† They went there, but the pot was empty.†Now I see!† said the mouse. â€Å"You came here when you said you were invited to be a godfather. First came Top-Off, then it was Half-Gone, and then†¦Ã¢â‚¬ Ã¢â‚¬ Be still,† said the cat. â€Å"I’ll eat you up, if you say another word.†Ã¢â‚¬ All-Gone† was already in the poor mouse’s mouth, and she had scarcely sai d it before the cat jumped on her and swallowed her down.

Free Essays on Prison Overcrowding

Prison Overcrowding Prison overcrowding is one of the largest problems facing the American criminal justice system today. According to the latest statistics from the U.S. Department of Justice, more than two million men and women are now behind bars in the United States (Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Statistics, 2003). The exploding prison population has been propelled by public policy changes that have increased the use of prison sentences as well as the length of time served, e.g. through mandatory minimum sentencing, "three strikes" laws, reductions in the availability of parole or early release, and the â€Å"War on Drugs† campaign. The overcrowding of prisons has many negative effects on prisoners. Because the experts do not agree on how to solve the problem of overcrowding there is no right answer, just possible solutions. Some components of the justice system believe that building more prisons, privatization, or design is the solution to the problem, while their opponents, argues that alternative methods could be used to solve the problem of prison overcrowding. These alternative methods include the problem-solving courts such as drug courts. Over the past few years’ crime has been declining so why then are our prisons still getting overcrowded. One of the reasons is that courts resort to imprisonment of offenders far too often even when alternative sentences are available. With these alternative sentences available some states have not introduced them while others don't utilize them adequately. Long prison sentences and modifying the parole system, is another reason contributing towards the overcrowding of prisons. Some states have done away with the parole system all together. The â€Å"War on Drugs† campaign has played a large part to the overcrowding with large numbers admitted to prisons for drug offences. Most of these drug offenders are drug addicts possessing very small quantities. The â€Å"Three S... An IEP - Definitions and Important Information

An IEP - Definitions and Important Information The Individual Education Program/Plan (IEP) Simply put, an IEP is a written plan that will describe the program(s) and special services the student requires to be successful. It is a plan that ensures that proper programming is in place to help the student with special needs to be successful at school. It is a working document that will be modified usually each term based on the ongoing needs of the student. The IEP is developed collaboratively by school staff and parents as well as medical staff if appropriate. An IEP will focus on social, academic and independence needs (daily living) depending on the area of need. It may have one or all three components addressed. School teams and parents usually decide who needs an IEP. Usually testing/assessment is done to support the need for an IEP, unless medical conditions are involved. An IEP must be in place for any student who has been identified as having special needs by an Identification, Placement, and Review Committee (IPRC) which is made up of school team members. In some jurisdictions, there are IEPs in place for students who are not working at grade level or have special needs but have not yet gone through the IPRC process. IEPs will vary depending on the educational jurisdiction. However, IEPs will describe specifically the special education program and/or the services necessary for a student with special needs. The IEP will identify the curricular areas that will need to be modified or it will state whether the child requires an alternative curriculum which is often the case for students with severe autism, severe developmental needs or cerebral palsy etc. It will also identify the accommod ations and or any special educational services the child may need to reach their full potential. It will contain measurable goals for the student. Some examples of services or support in the IEP could include: Curriculum a grade or two behindLess of the Curriculum (a modification.) Assistive Technology such as text to speech or speech to textA specialized laptop with specific software applications or switches to support the special needsBrailleFM SystemsPrint EnlargersSitting, standing, walking devices/equipmentAugmentative communicationStrategies, accommodations and any resources neededTeacher Aid Assistance Again, the plan is individualized and rarely will any 2 plans be the same. An IEP is NOT a set of lessons plans or daily plans. The IEP differs from regular classroom instruction and assessment in varying amounts. Some IEPs will state that a specialized placement is required while others will just state the accommodations and modifications that will occur in the regular classroom. IEPs will usually contain: an overview of the Student’s strengths and areas of need;the current level of the student’s functioning or achievement;annual goals written very specifically for the student;an overview of the program and services that the student will receive;an overview of the methods to determine progress and to monitor progress;assessment dataname, age, exceptionality or medical conditionstransitional plans (for older students) Parents are always involved in the development of the IEP, they play a key role and will sign the IEP. Most jurisdictions will require that the IEP be completed within 30 school days after the pupil has been placed in the program, however, its important to check into special education services in your own jurisdiction to be certain of the specific details. The IEP is a working document and when change is needed, the IEP will be revised. The principal is ultimately responsible to ensure that the IEP is being implemented. Parents are encouraged to work with teachers to ensure their childs needs are being met both at home and at school.

E-Commerce Strategies - Essay Example The strategies used are comparable to those used by companies that sell to businesses, having both similarities and differences.
